ANIRBAN LAHIRI RALLIES TO WIN MAYBANK MALAYSIAN OPEN
Anirban Lahiri captured his maiden European Tour title with a narrow one-shot victory over Bernd Wiesberger at the Maybank Malaysian Open. The Indian golf star, started the final day at the Kuala Lumpur Golf & Country Club with five strokes adrift after a superb ten-under 62 in the third round. He fired a four-under final round 68 to finish one stroke clear of the overnight leader.
The 27 years old Lahiri rolled in a 40-foot birdie putt from off the green on the 17th hole to overcome a five-shot deficit at the start of play. Wiesberger held a two-shot lead over Spain's Alejandro Canizares heading into the final round, but the Austrian faltered, carding a two-over 74 to finish outright second on 15-under. A par on the last from Lahiri left Wiesberger needing to birdie to take the tournament into a play-off, but the Austrian saw his 20-foot putt fall just short.
Ranked 73rd before the start of this tounament, Lahiri will now move into the world's top 40. He is having a very good chance to qualify for the Masters if he can retain his position inside the top 50 until April this year.
