WESTWOOD HOLDS ON, CANIZARES MOVES INTO TOP POSITION

Defending champions, Lee Westwood stayed strongly on the second day of the US$3 million Maybank Malaysian Open as Alejandro Cañizares joined him atop the leaderboard. A searing hot afternoon did not deter Westwood from playing another great round to stay at first place with Canizares who completed a bogey-free round with seven birdies.

The 41-year-old Englishman, bidding to become only the second player to win the event three times, posted a five-under-par 67 for a two-day score of 11-under-par 133 which was matched by Spaniard Cañizares, who turned into contention with a brilliant 65 at the Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club's West course.

Austrian Bernd Wiesberger who secured three consecutive top-six finishes in the Middle East swing, continued his recent outstanding form with a well-earned 66 with seven birdies and climbed up the leader board to 3rd position with eight under par.

Irishman Peter Lawrie, playing on a sponsor's invitation, shot a 66 to share third place with England's Paul Waring (68), while it was a day to forget for co-overnight leader Graeme McDowell, who signed for a 73 to slip six shots off the leading duo.Graeme McDowell felt the heat and had a 67 to follow his 66 yesterday and is still very much in the hunt. Frenchmen Gregory Bourdy had a hole-in-one on the 15th to make the first Ace since Simon Dyson in 2009 and matched his first day's 70 with a second round of two under par.
