KARLBERG TAKES TOP SPOT AFTER CIMB CLASSIC OPENING ROUND

Rikard Karlberg opened his campaign the 2014 CIMB Classic in style as he finished 7-under 65. The Swede delivered a perfect performance at the Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club with seven birdies and no bogey. Birdies at the at the last two holes were sufficient to put him ahead of the rest before and after the tournament was delayed due to thunderstorms.

Americans Billy Hurley III and Brian Stuard plus Angelo Que of the Philippines are sharing the second position with two strokes behind the leader. Stuard had five birdies on his front nine including four straight from the 14th after starting on the 10th, but also had two bogeys.

Que had six birdies on his first nine holes, benefiting from some superb approach play, and said greater trust in his shot selection had turned around his performance in recent weeks. Hurley III made a late catch-up when the tournament resumes to join Que and Stuard with 5-under 67.

Karlberg is the first Asian Tour player to hold the lead in CIMB Classic five-year history. There are 10 Asian Tour players who qualified for the jointly sanctioned PGA Tour event. Karlberg said he benefited from a more relaxed approach after struggling with a lingering viral infection that has affected his season.
