IIUM MUSTANGS BREAK UPM ANGELS DOMINATION IN SUKIPT 7S

IIUM Mustangs or International Islamic University Malaysia, placed themselves into the Malaysian Inter-Varsity rugby history as they won the gold at SUKIPT Rugby 7s on Friday. The glory came after a very dramatic finale where they stunned the tournament favourite, UPM Angels 19-17. It was a moment of brilliance for the Mustangs as they stormed into the final after defeating UTP Drillers in the last four.

UPM Angels, Universiti Putra Malaysia are well known for their dominance in rugby among the Higher Education Institutions (IPT) in Malaysia. They are the centre for the national sports excellence program in rugby since 2010. However, the IIUM Mustangs achievements showed how determinations and hardwork can overcome any superpowers in rugby.

UPM Angels have all the advantage to win the decisive match. They have national players in their line-up and playing on their own ground with strong home supports. They took the lead with two tries early in the match. IIUM Mustangs took the advantage when two UPM players were sent to the sin bin. Muhammad Hakimie Badrul Hisham got a try, and Jahangir Khan Majith Khan scored the conversion to reduce the deficit to 12-7 right before the break.

Angels extended their lead with a try early in the second half. The Mustangs did not give it up easily, they fought-on and got another try to narrow down the difference to just three points. As the match reaching to the end, and UPM Angel looked ready to celebrate, Muhammad Khairi Md Razi made the run of his life to give IIUM Mustangs the winning try.

It was a dramatic finale, a stunning victory, and definitely a great fight. There were 27 teams, and no one would have ever expected this. IIUM Mustangs bagged their first ever gold in SUKIPT Rugby 7s by beating a three times champion.
