KERIS CONLAY CLINCH MRL PREMIERSHIP

MRL PREMIER FINAL: KERIS CONLAY 24 - ASAS RC 17

Keris Conlay put themselves into Malaysia Rugby history after winning the first ever Malaysia Rugby League Premier Division. They beat ASAS Rugby Club 24-17 in the final to claim the biggest prize in the country's club rugby competition. The victory is their third club championships, after winning the Super League twice in 2015 and 2015.

It was business as usual for Keris Conlay at the UPM Serdang pitch on Saturday. They took the lead just after four minutes with Mohd Fared Yahya's try, and Mohd Fairuz Ab Rahman scored the conversion. ASAS RC reduced the deficit with a try by Syarif Nurhidayat Muzhaimey in the 15th minute. Mohd Fairuz made it into the scoresheet again in the 24th and 30th minute from two penalties. Kelevi Rokoua Ketedromo gave ASAS RC another lift with his try in the 33rd minute, and Luqman Hakim scored the conversion to keep the scoreline very close at halftime.

Keris Conlay realised that 13-12 was not good enough. They went on to pressure ASAS RC early in the second half to build up the momentum. Keris Conlay were awarded a penalty five minutes after the match resumed, and Mohd Fairuz was at his best to extend his team's advantage.

ASAS RC's faced another setback in the 65th minute, Etonia Vaqa Saukuru made another try for Keris Conlay. Though, the Alam Shah Oldboys did not give up and kept on fighting. A try by Muhamad Farid Abd Rahman in the 29th minute gave them another fighting chance. But four minutes before the fulltime, Mohd Fairuz kicked in another penalty to take Keris Conlay to a seven points advantage. That last kick was a vital one as it assured Keris Conlay to be on the champions podium again.

Another great season for Zainal Rafique's team as they won all the matches in the Premier division. ASAS RC also enjoyed a stunning season as they reached the final after beating many top teams. The winner of the MRL Premier Division will meet MRL East Division winner, Eagles Rugby Club on 15th April for the Malaysia Rugby Championship title.
