HARRINGTON BEAT BERGER IN PLAY-OFF TO WIN HONDA CLASSIC
Three times major winner Padraig Harrington beat American rookie Daniel Berger in play-off to win the Honda Classic at Palm Beach. The 43 years-old Irishman thinks he has found the mental edge he has been missing after ending a seven year wait for a title on either PGA Tour or European Tour.
Harrington sealed victory on the second hole and qualifies for the Masters after missing out in 2014. Ten years after winning the Honda Classic for his first PGA Tour victory, Harrington won it again. It was his first PGA Tour victory since he won the 2008 PGA Championship at Oakland Hills for back-to-back majors.
Harrington made four straight birdies on the back nine to take the lead, but dropped back with a double bogey on the par-3 17th. But he made a 15-foot birdie putt to force a playoff. And Harrington hit to 3 feet on the 17th to win on the second playoff hole when 21-year-old Berger hit into the water and made double bogey.
It is a great comeback for Harrington who he had fallen to No. 297 in the world. He lost his card last year and needed a sponsor's exemption to get in the Honda Classic. Now he's eligible for The Masters, The Players Championship and at least two World Golf Championships.
