MALAYSIA CREATE HISTORY BY WINNING FIRST MEN RUGBY GOLD AT SEA GAMES

Malaysia completed a brilliant year in Rugby as they won the men rugby gold medal at the SEA Games in Kuala Lumpur. Three months after claiming their second consecutive Asia Rugby Championship Division One title, the Malaysia 7's team took their turn and produced a spectacular performance to capture their first ever gold in rugby.

The Malaysia 7's team had a great start on the first day as they won all their round-robin matches, including wins over Singapore 12-10 and 2015 Gold Medalist, Philippines 24-14. However, they had a nervy start on the final day as they lose to Thailand in the morning but recovered with a 75-0 thrashing of Indonesia in the last group match. Malaysia topped the table sharing same points with Singapore and Thailand. But Thailand were out of the final because of the score difference.
Almost 20,000 fans turned-up at the Kelana Jaya Stadium. Malaysia went on the offensive from the start and earned the first points from a try by Muhammad Azwan Zuwairi Mat Zizi but Singapore reduced the deficit to 7-5, from a try by Yau Yu Hong.  The homeside coached by  Mohd Saizul Hafifi regrouped afterwards resulting in Muhammad Zulhisham Rasli outrunning the opponents for a try followed by a conversion by Muhammad Azwan, leaving the score to stand at 12-7 at the break. Malaysia made another two tries and one conversion in the second half to win the final match 22-7.

The victory completes Malaysia's awesome season as both the 15's and 7's teams achieved their target for the year. Malaysia's Prime Minister, Najib Razak was also at the stadium to witness the historic moment, and acknowledge the rise of Malaysian Rugby.  In earlier match, Thailand beat Philippines 26-7 in the third place battle and earned the bronze medal.
