UAE OVERCOME THAILAND AT ASIAN RUGBY CHAMPIONSHIP

ARC: UAE 53 - THAILAND 22

United Arab Emirates (UAE) started their Asian Rugby Championship (ARC) in style by defeating Thailand 53-22 on Sunday. The opening match at the Kelana Jaya Stadium saw Thailand stunned UAE after two minutes with a try by Warongkorn Khamkoet. UAE replied with a try three minutes later by Christopher Jones-Griffiths but missed their conversion.

Thailand tried to pull away with another try by Pannapat Pooltharat, but UAE kept them within sight with Jaen Botes try. Both teams were equally good in the first half until UAE got a penalty in the 35th minute. Clint Berkenshaw did not make a mistake to give UAE a 20-17 lead at the break.

UAE came back in the second half with more effective forward plays. They were quick to close gaps not allowing Thailand players for breakthrough. Phil Brady started to pull UAE away with a try in the 53rd minute. Hassan Al Noobi scored the conversion before he himself tried for UAE three minutes later.

Thailand had no reply to the rising Emirates. UAE made four more tries from Jonathan Greenwood, Edward Lewsey, Matthew Hutchings and Adam Telford towards the end of the match. Thailand managed to get a try from Akarin Thitisakulvit, but it was not enough to deny UAE from clinching a perfect start in the ARC 2015.
