Kedah won their Malaysia Cup semifinal first leg after the referee awarded three penalties in the match. The home side were awarded a penalty kick after Brazilian Thiago Fernandes was fouled inside the PDRM's penalty box. Fernandes calmly placed his penalty past PDRM goalkeeper Haziq Nadzi for the lead.

Two minutes later, PDRM were awarded a penalty after Kedah defender Bang Seung Hwan took down winger Christopher Keli with a clumsy tackle. Brazilian Guilherme De Paula had to retake his penalty but the striker did not make a mistake from his second attempt to level for the visitors.

In the 80th minute, Kedah were awarded another penalty after Fernandes was fouled by PDRM keeper Haziq. Midfielder Liridon Krasniqi placed the ball into the left corner of the next to earn Kedah the win. PDRM will host Kedah in the return leg on Oct 15 at Hang Jebat Stadium.
