MALAYSIA WIN FIRST DIVISION ONE TITLE IN STYLE

ASIA RUGBY CHAMPIONSHIP 2016
MALAYSIA 40 - SINGAPORE 20

Malaysia produced a huge surprise to secure their first ever major title by thrashing Singapore 40-20 to win the 1st Division of Asia Rugby Championship at the Royal Selangor Club pitch in Bukit Kiara on Saturday. Pretty much a newbie after the  promotion from Division 2 last year Malaysia secured the highest honor for Malaysian Rugby in many many years. Quite a tall order for Malaysia fielding many home grown and mixed of young and old players for the next generation of Malaysian rugby.

Mohd Azmir Zainul Abidin moved with two tries and Saukuru, Nasalo, and Takubu all with a try a piece from them respectively. Mohd Syarif Saiful Aazwan Sudin converted almost all the penalties and conversion for Malaysia. The fact that Malaysia had lost to the flamboyant Phillipines 15-10 in the opening match, they found the strength with the mauling of Sri Lanka 44-17 and Singapore seemed like a walk in the park with a sturdy scoreline of 40-20. Malaysia is expected to shoot up in the World Rugby Ranking after their latest ARC triumph. Malaysia stands at no 60 after losing their first match to the Philippines.

Malaysia team is now opting to play in the playoff for a place in the Premier Division. The Division One champions will usually be involved a playoff with the team who finish third in Premier Division for a chance to compete in the top flight. Japan, Hong Kong and South Korea are competing in Premier Division

Singapore were relegated from the Asia Rugby Championship Division 1 yesterday after the defeat. The Republic are bottom of the group, which includes the Philippines and Sri Lanka. For the record they were only invited to compete at the Championship only after Kazakhstan's late withdrawal last month.
