LIONS STILL IN THE RACE AFTER WIN OVER PHILIPPINES

ASIA RUGBY CHAMPIONSHIP 2016
SINGAPORE 28 - PHILIPPINES 24

The current makeup of the Singapore Team sees a balanced mix of expatriates who have fulfilled World Rugby eligibility rules and local born and bred Singaporean players. The Volcanoes seems to field almost the same ratio of expatriates over local. The matched looked pretty much like New Zealand against Australia to most. Philippines who got the best of Malaysia in the opening match looked jaded and succumb to a 28 - 24 loss to the Singapore side. Quite an even match to say the least but Singapore proved the better team that fateful evening.

After losing the opening match to Sri Lanka, Singapore is desperate to win at Royal Selangor Club pitch, Bukit Kiara yesterday to remain in the top flight. Coach Inuke Unaaga Afeaki's team played their heart out but they outplayed by the Volcanoes in the 1st half 12 - 10. It was Michael Richard Patterson on the scoresheet again along with Warren John Ansell for Singapore. The Volcanoes scores were contributed by Erik Ericsson, Oliver Saunders and Andrew Ramsden.

Singapore upped their tempo in the second half although both teams made 2 tries a piece in the 2nd half. Penalties and Conversion made the difference to the eventual winner. The win has blown the group wide open with all the teams has a striking distance chance to a win in the final round matched in Saturday. Malaysia shared the top spot with the Philippines with 6 points but with a superior score difference. Sri Lanka is 3rd and Singapore is 4th with 5 and 4 points respectively. The final round on Saturday will see off Malaysia facing Singapore and Sri Lanka will meet the Philippines. Only the top three teams will stay in Division One next season.
