JAPAN IS THE ASIA RUGBY SEVENS CHAMPIONS

Japan proved that they are the rugby powerhouse in Asia by winning the 2018 Asia Rugby Sevens Series. After losing the Asian Games Gold Medal to Hong Kong, the Japanese bounced back and won all the three series to bag the overall title. The victory assured them a place in the 2019 World Rugby Sevens Series.

Japan kicked-off in the final series in Colombo with a comfortable 61-0 win over Malaysia. They went on to beat Korea 40-0 and Philippines 21-12 to finish top in Pool A. In the semifinals, they overcame host Sri Lanka with a 34-17 victory. Japan's perfect run continued as they beat Hong Kong 19-5 in the cup final to clinch their third series victory. Katsuyuki Sakai came out as top player in the Sri Lanka Series with 4 tries and 16 conversions.

Japan finished on top of the Asia Rugby Sevens Series table with 36 points. Hong Kong took the second place with 30 points and Philippines are third with 20 points. Sri Lanka are fourth, just short of one point behind the Philippines. Malaysia finished at the bottom despite reaching the Plate Final in the last series.
