MIGUEL CARBALLO SEALS CIPUTRA GOLFPRENEUR TITLE IN PLAY-OFF

Miguel Carballo of Argentina secured his maiden Asian Development Tour (ADT) title in style after prevailing in an epic play-off battle that stretched over seven holes at the Ciputra Golfpreneur Tournament presented by Panasonic on Saturday. The 39-year-old Carballo, playing in his first year in Asia after coming through the Qualifying School in January, overturned a six-shot deficit by carding eight birdies against no bogey for a closing eight-under-par 64 at the BSD Course by Damai Indah Golf.

Young guns Amir Nazrin of Malaysia and Poom Pattaropong of Thailand returned with respective rounds of 65 and 68 to force the sudden-death play-off with Carballo after the trio was tied on 16-under-par 272 total in regulation play at the US$110,000 ADT event.

The play-off battle was held on the par-five 18th hole where the 21-year-old Amir was eliminated on the first extra hole after he hit a wayward tee shot into the water hazard which resulted in a par while Carballo and Poom birdied. The remaining duo then went head to head in what has become the longest play-off battle on the ADT since the secondary circuit was inaugurated in 2010. The lengthy play-off would also match the record which was set on the premier Asian Tour in 2001.

The pair settled for par on the second extra hole and birdied their next three attempts before officials decided to change the format of play where the duo will hit from 150 metres starting from the sixth play-off hole. Both Carballo and Poom found the cup in three shots and were forced to return to where they hit from 150 metres for the record seventh play-off hole where Carballo eventually triumphed after tapping in his third shot while Poom missed his 10-footer.

Carballo, who missed only one green in regulation in his closing 64, became the first Argentinean to win on the ADT following his breakthrough victory. He takes home a winner’s prize purse of US$19,250 and receives six Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) points.
