PHILIPPINES VOLCANOES CAPTURE ASIA RUGBY DIVISION 1 TITLE

The Philippines beat Singapore for the second time this year to clinch the Asia Rugby Championship Division 1 title. After winning 32-24 in the first match, the Volcanoes continued their fine run to record a 38-12 victory in Calamba, Laguna. They finished third in last year, and it is their first Asia Rugby triumph since 2012.

Philippines (56th) is ranked two places below Singapore in the World Rugby standings. After Singapore took the lead through Matthew Humphries's early try, Steve Pagtalunan Howorth equalised for the home side. Robert Luceno Fogerty scored the conversion, and another two penalties later to give his team a comfortable 13-5 advantage. They went on and scored another try before going into the break with an 18-12 lead.

The second half saw the Philippines total domination. Justin Villazor Coveney and Joe Palabay Dawson were also on the scoresheet as the Volcanoes scored another 20 points. The home side also defended well to deny any chance for a Singapore comeback. Philippines finally sealed the championship with a strong 38-12 finishing.
