ARRC: ZAMRI SCORES A DOUBLE AT SEPANG

Mohd Zamri Baba fought the pain of his injuries to claim a double victory ahead of poleman, Katsuaki Fujiwara in SuperSports 600cc battle as the opening round of the 2014 PETRONAS Asia Road Racing Championship in Sepang on Sunday.

The victory also marked the Malaysian rider first time winning his home race, a feat only reigning champion, Azlan Shah Kamaruzaman and Chia Tuck Cheong achieved before.

Zamri, who is still using crutches after injuring his left leg in a dirt track training accident in February, won the Race One in 27:38.920. Yuki Ito of Japan finished second in 27:39.471, while 2011 champion Katsuaki Fujiwara took third place in 27:40.605.

The Musashi Boon Siew Honda Racing rider went on to mastermind one of the best races of his career in Race Two to trail his Kawasaki rival and lay his assault in the final lap whilst the latter struggled with grip and handling issues. He completed the race in 27:28.232 while Fujiwara was forced to be content in second place with 27:29.004 and Makoto Tamada took third in 27:29.004.

Picking up 50 points from this race, Zamri now leads the SuperSports 600cc standings followed by Fujiwara with 36 points and Tamada third, 29 points.
