PHILIPPINES REIGN SUPREME IN THRILLING UNION CUP FINAL

The Philippines cemented their status as Southeast Asia's rugby powerhouse after successfully defending the Union Cup with a commanding 39-18 victory over Malaysia in a thrilling final at Nonthaburi Provincial Stadium, Thailand. The triumph secured the Volcanoes' second consecutive Union Cup title and extended their dominance in the region's premier 15s competition.

However, the final was anything but straightforward. Malaysia, fielding a youthful squad packed with new faces, stunned the defending champions with an inspired first-half display. Playing with speed, determination and fearless ambition, the Bunga Raya matched the experienced Filipinos blow for blow as the teams headed into halftime locked at 15-15.

The turning point came during the break. The Philippines team management made crucial tactical adjustments, while the players' experience began to shine. The defending champions returned with greater composure, dominated possession and territory, and took complete control of the second half. Their clinical execution and disciplined defence eventually secured a convincing 39-18 victory, capping another memorable championship campaign.


The battle for third place also produced entertaining rugby as Chinese Taipei defeated Singapore 47-22. Displaying blistering pace and attacking flair, Chinese Taipei outplayed their opponents with an exciting brand of rugby to secure the bronze medal. Host nation Thailand delighted home supporters by coming from behind to beat the Asia Barbarians 27-20, finishing fifth in dramatic fashion.

The third edition of the Union Cup has undoubtedly been the most exciting yet. Featuring eight competing nations, the championship highlighted the remarkable rise of rugby across the region. Laos and Guam also impressed with their steady improvement, demonstrating the increasing competitiveness of emerging rugby nations.

Thailand once again proved to be an outstanding host, delivering another superbly organised international tournament. As the curtain fell on an unforgettable weekend in Nonthaburi, one thing became clear: the greatest winner was rugby itself. With higher standards, stronger competition and growing passion throughout Southeast Asia, the sport continues its unstoppable rise across the region.

The historic city of Melaka is gearing up for a major sporting spectacle as the CM Cup Rugby Tournament 2025 takes place at the iconic Stadium Kubu ( Hang Tuah Stadium ) from 29–31 August. The tournament will feature five categories, with eight teams competing in each division and five teams in the Women’s category. In total, nearly 800 players, coaches, and officials are expected to gather, making this one of the biggest rugby events in Malaysia this year.
