JAPAN DEFEATS RUSSIA ON RUGBY WORLD CUP 2019 OPENING NIGHT

Japan overcame a nightmare start to its own Rugby World Cup to clinch a 30-10 victory over Russia in the tournament's opening game Friday. After not winning any of their opening matches in their first seven World Cup participations, Japan have now won their opener in each of their last two.

The Brave Blossoms won after trailing by seven points. A fifth-minute try by Russia was the fastest in the opening match of a Rugby World Cup. Kotaro Matsushima became the first player to score a hat-trick of tries for Japan in a World Cup match. He also became the first to score three tries in a World Cup opener.

Japan's starting front row made 32 tackles without missing a single one. Luke Thompson joined centre Yukio Motoki as the only players to have represented Japan in four different World Cups. Five Japanese players covered more than 50 metres, while no Russian player gained 50 metres in the match.
