HONG KONG THUMP MALAYSIA TO CLAIM OPENING WIN IN ARC

Hong Kong kick-started their Asia Rugby Championship Top Division campaign with a convincing win over Malaysia at the National Stadium in Kuala Lumpur. The Dragons showed why they are the favourite to reach the 2019 Rugby World Cup by defeating the newly promoted Malaysian team 67-8 on Sunday. The Asia Top Division is totally a different level of rugby for the Fearless Hibiscus although they have won two consecutive Asia Division One titles in 2016 and 2017.

The Fearless Hibiscus were looking good early in the match. After being held for the first 10 minutes, Hong Kong finally got the break through with a try by Thomas Lamboley in the 14th minute. Nine minutes later, they were 8-0 up after a penalty taken by Matthew Rosslee.

Hong Kong started to show their class at the half hour mark. Another try by Lamboley and a conversion by Rossley put them further ahead. Then, Etonia Vaqa Saukuru brought Malaysia back into the game with a try in the 33rd minute. The Dragons were quick to react. They made two tries through Jack Neville and Liam Slatem before heading to the changing room with 27-5 advantage.

The second half was quite a one-sided display. Salom Yiu Kam Shing, Jamie Pincott, Conor Hartley and Robert Keith scored six tries between them to give Hong Kong a very comfortable win. A 35th minute penalty by Mohamad Syarif Saiful Aazwan could not deny the Dragons from claiming a huge 67-8 victory.

The result took Hong Kong to the top of the table, and sent Malaysia to the bottom. The Dragons will head to Incheon for their second match in the Asia Rugby Championship 2018 against South Korea on 12th May. And Malaysia will travel to South Korea for their match on 19th May.
