KUBOYA PREVAILS IN PLAY-OFF TO WIN PANASONIC OPEN JAPAN

Image
Japan's Kenichi Kuboya kept the Panasonic OPEN Japan trophy on home soil when he defeated compatriot Katsumasa Miyamoto at the first play-off hole on Sunday. Victory at the ¥150 million (approximately US$1.37million) event was the first for the 45-year-old in five years and also provided him with much relief as he was facing the prospect of losing his winner's exemption status on the Japan Golf Tour Organisation (JGTO) this year.   Kuboya produced a final day heroics when he signed for a seven-under-par 64 to force a play-off with Miyamoto who compiled a four-day total of 11-under-par 273 at the Chiba Country Club . Kuboya then gained the early advantage when Miyamoto hit his tee shot out of bounds at the first play-off hole. After finding further trouble with his second tee shot which landed behind the tree and with Kuboya reaching the green in three, Miyamoto would concede defeat to Kuboya who could even afford to three-putt for a bogey to win. Canada won their maiden World Sevens Series title after beating the United States 26-19. The World Rugby Sevens Series in Singapore was full of extraordinary upsets which resulted the first ever all-American final. The Canadians regained their composure after squandering a 19-0 lead as their North American neighbours levelled the final at 19-19 to score the winning try through Lucas Hammond less than two minutes from the end, denying the US their second tournament success after winning at London in 2015. For the US, it was a bittersweet moment. The Eagles made the final after losing in the semis at each of the last three World Series tournaments but coach Mike Friday claimed the Americans lost the final because they gave Canada too big a start. Canada had never won a World Series title before and earned their way into the final the hard way, beating traditional powerhouses New Zealand 26-14 in the quarter-finals then England 17-5 in the semis. www.tigerssupersports
