PDRM EDGE JOHOR IN THRILLING PIALA AGONG FINAL
Polis DiRaja Malaysia (PDRM) once again proved their dominance as a rugby powerhouse after clinching the 2025 Piala Agong title, defeating Johor 18-17 in a thrilling final at UM Arena earlier this evening.
Even sweeter, the victory marked a historic hat-trick of championships for PDRM in Malaysia’s most prestigious rugby tournament.
The triumph was nothing short of dramatic. Under head coach Dinesvaran Krishnan, Sang Saka Biru fought until the final moments of the match to break Johor’s hearts.
The highly anticipated clash between the two best teams in the country began with both sides missing early penalty chances through Aqasha Daniel Irwan (Johor) and Muhamad Amirul Aqil Kamsol (PDRM).
Amirul Aqil later redeemed himself by slotting in a penalty to give PDRM the lead in the 27th minute. Johor, however, responded swiftly two minutes later with a quick-penalty try from naturalised player Sae Faalupega, converted by Aqasha Daniel.
Just before halftime, Owen Niue capitalised on a Johor error to score PDRM’s first try, giving them an 8-7 advantage at the break.
In the 48th minute, Amirul Aqil added another penalty to make it 11-7.
Johor’s head coach, Rodney So’oialo, the former New Zealand All Black, saw his side reduced to 14 men when Kolinio Yabia received a yellow card in the 58th minute for an off-the-ball foul on Taniela Tuirabe.
Four minutes later, Johor’s woes deepened as Supriyanto Sudyai was also sin-binned following a scrum incident.
Despite being down to 13 players, Johor fought bravely and sensationally scored a second try in the 68th minute through Serpepeli Turuva, with Aqasha Daniel’s conversion putting them ahead 14-11.
Aqasha then extended the lead to 17-11 with a penalty in the 74th minute.
But PDRM, calm under pressure, mounted one last attack, scoring a decisive try in the 80th minute, before Amirul Aqil’s clutch conversion sealed the 18-17 victory and PDRM’s fifth Piala Agong crown.
Amirul Aqil was named the Best Player of the final, capping off an outstanding season in which he scored 87 points for PDRM, contributed through 24 conversions and 13 penalties. The Blue Warriors retained their dominance with another thrilling win over Johor, repeating their 2024 final triumph and adding to their 2023 title against Putrajaya.
In the third-place playoff, Kelantan defeated Perlis 50-39.
