AGONG CUP QUARTERFINALS SET AFTER THRILLING GROUP STAGE
After five weeks of pulsating action, the Agong Cup group stage has concluded, with all ten teams battling hard for glory in Malaysia’s most prestigious rugby competition.
Defending champions PDRM lived up to their billing, topping Group A with a flawless record of four wins from four matches. Under the guidance of former national stars Dineswaran Krishnan and Yusli Ramli, the Police Team have now set their sights on a historic fifth title, having lifted the Agong Cup four times since 1983.
Group B belonged to Johor, who collected maximum points under the leadership of head coach Rodney So’oialo. Last year’s finalists are chasing their third Agong Cup crown, with their most recent triumph dating back to 2017.
Meanwhile, Pahang and Kedah’s campaigns came to a bitter end after finishing bottom of their respective groups, leaving the big guns and dark horses to charge into the quarterfinals.
The Piala Agong, first contested in 1983, is Malaysia’s biggest and longest-running rugby championship. It remains the ultimate battleground where state pride, tradition, and national glory collide every season.
The knockout stage on 11 October promises fireworks. PDRM, the defending kings, will lock horns with Kuala Lumpur at Pulapol Field in a battle of grit and pride. On the East Coast, Terengganu and Kelantan will reignite their fierce derby rivalry at Tengku Muhammad Ismail Stadium, with Kelantan’s four-time champions eager to reclaim past glory while Terengganu, crowned once in 2019 under the late Izaimi Zainudin, fight to honour their legacy.
In Mount Austin, Johor clash with Selangor in a showdown between power and tradition. Meanwhile, Perlis brace themselves for the might of ATM at the Syed Putera Sports Complex, a team steeped in history with 11 titles between 1986 and 1999.
As the stage is set, only the fearless will march on. The Agong Cup quarterfinals are here and the rivalries are about to explode.
