ASIA RUGBY CHAMPIONSHIP: MALAYSIA 40 - PHILIPPINES 8

Malaysia took a step closer to the Asia Top Division after a convincing 40-8 victory over the Philippines at the Asia Rugby Championship in Ipoh. The host, who were stunned in last year's opening match by the same opponent showed great character to record the big margin victory.

Malaysia were without two key players due to injury and concussion, took seventeen minutes before breaking the duck against the Philippines. Sakiusa Terence Gavidi's try and coversion by Wan Mohammad Asyraf conversion gave them the lead, but the Volcanoes reduced he deficit with Timothy Bweheni's penalty. The Bunga Raya squad scored another three tries through Syarif Nurhidayat Muzhaimey, Amirul Sani and Wong Wye Wye. Despite missing a few conversions, Wan Mohammad Asyraf 35th minute penalty was enough for Malaysia to take a strong 25-3 advantage at half time.

Malaysia returned to the pitch with the same motivation. They pushed their opponent and earned a penalty, which was scored by Wan Mohammad Asyraf. Philippines had a chance for a comeback after a try by Justin Coveney, however the Malaysians were solid at almost every area. Two more tries by Mohamad Amin Jamaluddin and Dinesvaran Krishnan, and a conversion by Muhamad Amirul Aqil Kamsol ensure Malaysia remain at the top of the Division One table.

The result produced another crucial encounter on the last day of the championship. Malaysia will face Sri Lanka in the title deciding match on Saturday.
