DREAM BEYOND BORDERS, PLAY BEYOND LIMITS
For many years, Malaysia has welcomed foreign players into its domestic rugby scene, hoping they would raise the standard of local competitions. But despite their presence, our international performance has remained inconsistent. The national team once soared, winning Asia Division 2 and Division 1, and even reaching the Asia Top Division. Players like Duke Krishnan, Marc Le, Shahir Ashraf Rosli, Amin Jamaluddin, and a few outstanding Fijians made a real difference. But once they retired, and we relied mostly on local-based players, the Bunga Raya team struggled to maintain that level.
What made Duke and Marc different? They played abroad. Duke featured in Japan’s Top League and Major League Rugby in the USA. Marc played in New Zealand and later Japan. Their growth overseas in structured systems, higher-paced competitions, and professional setups, turned them into game-changers for Malaysia.
Playing abroad transforms players. They face new challenges, adapt to unfamiliar systems, and develop resilience. In smaller rugby nations, they often get more game time, take leadership roles, and express their creativity. Most importantly, they return with fresh ideas and raise the standard at home.
Perhaps it’s time we start aiming higher. Schools and academies could focus not only on producing players for the Piala Agong or National Sevens, but also on developing individuals who can thrive in foreign leagues. Mentally tough, tactically smart, and confident.
Malaysia Rugby Union (MRU) could explore ways to create more opportunities abroad. Building relationships with international universities and clubs, introducing incentives, and engaging agents to showcase Malaysian talent.
Like South American footballers who play in Europe and lift their countries at World Cups, Malaysia can develop its own rugby identity through experience, not imports.
Let’s invest in our talent. Let them go out, face the world, and return stronger. True success comes not from buying talent, but from building it, exporting it, and welcoming it home better than before.
