NOVAK DJOKOVIC WINS 20TH GRAND SLAM TITLE AT WIMBLEDON


Novak Djokovic claimed his third Grand Slam title of the year. The world number one beat Matteo Berrettini 6-7 (4-7) 6-4 6-4 6-3 to win the prestigious Wimbledon title. The victory extended his number one status in the ATP rankings to 329 weeks.

Djokovic has dominated the 2021 tennis calendar after winning three Grand Slam titles including the Australian and French Open. His latest victory equals him with Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal on 20 career grand slams, placing him as one of the greatest players in the history of the sport.

After losing narrowly in the opening set in the final, Djokovic displayed his true strength to claim the next three sets. Despite losing in the final, Berrettini moves up one place to eighth while Federer, who has spent 310 weeks at number one in the past, dropped a place to nine.

In the women category, Ashleigh Barty won her first Wimbledon title after defeating Karolina Pliskova 6-3, 6-7 (4-7), 6-3 in the final. She became the first Australian to win the title in 41 years. The last Australian winner was Evonne Goolagong Cawley, who won it in 1980. The victory is Barty's second Grand Slam title after winning the French Open in 2019.
