THAILAND BEAT MALAYSIA TO WIN NATIONS CUP

NATIONS CUP (U21 FINAL): THAILAND 2 - MALAYSIA 1

Thailand took advantage on a late error by Malaysia to lift the Nations Cup Under-21 title after a 2-1 win in the final at the Hang Jebat Stadium in Malacca on Sunday. Coach Frank Bernhardt only made two changes from the side which defeated Singapore 3-0 on Friday with forward Arif Anwar replacing the injured Adam Nor Azlin while Irfan Zakaria took Shahrul Hakim Rahim's place in midfield.

Thailand took the lead inside three minutes after Malaysia failed to deal with a free-kick into the box. Suradet Klankham's delivery was flicked on inside the box with ball striking the post to give Worawut the simplest of finishes.

Malaysia could have gone 2-0 down in the 11th minute if not for a crucial save by goalkeeper on Tanasit Siripala, who had burst through the home defence while defender Adib Zainuddin then blocked a close-range drive by Nattawut Sombatyotha.

The hosts were struggling to even string a few passes together but conjured up an equaliser 10 minutes before half-time when right-winger Nur Syamie ran on to a cross-field pass by Safawi Rashid and finished with aplomb past Thai goalkeeper Apirak Worawong. Jafri then came close twice as Malaysia, buoyed by the goal, increased the tempo but it was Thailand who almost regained the lead when the second half began.

Luckily for Malaysia, Tanasit placed his shot high over the bar when well-placed in the 51st minute and Adib was forced into a goal-line clearance 15 minutes later by substitute Montree Promsawat. Adib came to Malaysia's rescue again in the 70th minute by hacking away Chenrop's goal-bound shot before Malaysia were carved open nine minutes later. Substitute Zuasyraf Zulkiefle carelessly gave the ball away as Malaysia pushed forward and all of a sudden Adib found himself facing three Thai attackers by himself with Chenrop applying the final touch to the breakaway.
