Germany have won the first men’s tournament of the inaugural HSBC World Rugby Sevens Challenger Series in Viña del Mar, Chile, after beating Hong Kong 10-0 in a hard-fought final at the Estadio Sausalito. Fiji came out on top against South Africa for the second time in eight days, although this time their prize was not ninth place but a first HSBC Sydney Sevens title. Both teams had been determined to bounce back from that disappointment in Hamilton and served up a Cup final every bit as thrilling as their last meeting in Singapore when Fiji had led 19-0 at half-time only for South Africa to storm back and triumph 21-19. Fiji nearly had the dream start in their first Cup final of the season, but JC Pretorius and Selvyn Davids managed to hold Meli Derenalagi over the line. New Zealand continue to write new chapters in the history of the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series after beating Canada 33-7 in the final to become the first to successfully defend the HSBC Sydney Sevens title. Malaysia rugby player, Lawrence Petrus has agreed to join University of Western Australia (UWA) for the upcoming season. The 25-year-old forward will take the opportunity to play in the Western Australia Rugby League in starting this April. He will travel to Perth at the end of February and train with his new club before the league kick-off. Standing at 178cm tall, the deal was made possible by his manager, Khairul Shazwan. Lawrence has played for Malaysia senior team for two years in the Premier Division of the Asia Rugby Championship . The 2019 Agong's Cup winner with Terengganu is excited with the move and wants to be featured in as many matches as possible. He also hope that more Malaysian players will take-up new challenges by playing in foreign leagues. The All Blacks Sevens extended their record as the most successful team on home soil in the history of the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series with a 27-5 defeat of France in the HSBC New Zealand Sevens Cup final. The title was New Zealand's 10th on home soil but the first in Hamilton, having won their last title in Wellington in 2016. It was also their 60th title in series history and the second of season after victory in Cape Town last month. France, playing in their first ever Cup final in New Zealand, were on the back foot early on after Tavite Veredamu was sin-binned for not being back 10 metres, All Blacks Sevens co-captain Scott Curry powered through two defenders seconds later to open the scoring. The Black Ferns Sevens continued their perfect record against Canada in Cup finals on the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series to become the inaugural champions in Hamilton. This was the seventh meeting of the sides in a title decider and just like the previous six it was the Black Ferns Sevens celebrating, more so this time after the 24-7 victory saw them crowned HSBC New Zealand Sevens champions to become the third team to win a title on home soil. STJ Home of Warriors won the inaugural TM One Touch Corporate Challenge as they edged SEMSAS in the alumni grand final. The Warriors showed class to beat the SEMSAS old boys 3-2 in a thrilling match. SMS Oldboys bagged the bronze after they beat VIOBA in the third placing match. The Online Rugby Magazine Telekom Malaysia (TM) A clinched the corporate category title after a 4-2 victory over IJM in the final. After displaying good performance during the preliminary round, TM A continued their fine run in the final. Malaysia Airlines (MAS) beat Sime Darby A 2-0 to finish third in the corporate category. The inaugural TM One Touch Corporate Challenge was held at the MMU Stadium in Cyberjaya on Saturday. 12 teams participated in the two categories competition.
